How often do we hear, "But, you're a boy..." -or- "But, you're a girl..." It's generally implied that whatever you were doing before that moment isn't in favor of the gender specified. "You can't..." Wear pink... Love trucks... Read comics... Play video games... Wear dresses... When Xoey emerged into my thoughts, the phrase "I ain't a girl. I ain't a boy. I'm a pirate" was hers. I knew that she would never accept anyone's opinion of what she was or was not capable of. The barefoot, white-haired pirate, who just happens to be eleven years of age will always be what she wants to be. It does not mean she is invincible or immune to those who would sneer down at her. It does, however, mean that this little pirate will defy all odds. No matter what. So, be like Xoey. Be a pirate.
